I have recently discovered "Dear John", a sitcom from the early 90s starring Judd Hirsch and Susan Walters, among many other fine actors. I get that Mary Beth is supposed to be naive but her lines are so dry, corny, and PREDICTABLE.
I give "Dear John" a minimum rating of 6 for the season 3 episode s that I have seen thus far. Many episodes are 8+ imo.

I agree. Susan played the role fine but the show's producers likely wanted a really beautiful woman to be part of the group.

Yes, I also agree and rate the Dear John shows very highly.
I think the Mary Beth character was added mostly for eye candy value.
