Since the show keeps referencing season 1, will they ever explain how Damon was able to access the power to manipulate these two supernatural happenings or did I miss something?

I was very sad when they decided to drop that part of vampirism. I always thought it was awesome.

that and the crow as they called it, actually a raven wouldn't act on cue. ravens and crows are very much in real life like damon salvatore himself. oppetunistic not very happy and weary of people sometimes you see them doing things on cue it's either they are pets or trained to do things. but never the less they won't listen. take it from someone who tries to get their adoptive crows that only live in the backyard to come by. even when you feed em to try to get em to do what you want they won't thats whats great about them they're wild animals personalties all their own and snarky as anything.

Yeah, it was element of storytelling that they dropped very early on (by episode 5 ).
Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level then beat you with experience.

That was something vampires can do in the novels. But both were hard to work with so they dropped it.
