Outside of Animal Kingdom which gave her international attention, and what other have mentioned re previous years on stage and film, her notable 1970's role that gave her recognition (as in recognized for her appearance not her work) in Australia was in the risque comedy movie Alvin Purple, where among others appeared completely nude. Young, blonde and somewhat attractive for the time (babydoll face) and not prudish in this era assisted in eventually making her a household name.

I think she is known for being a good actress, working consistenly in television, film and stage (mostly in Australia), for better than 40 years.
Unless you are Australian, it really does make sense you wouldn't have heard of her until her first Oscar nomination.

She played an angry wife and threw a plate at in the video for John Farnhams "You're the voice" song in 1986. Ok that wasn't her big break. She seems to have been around forever in Australia though, great to see her doing well.

but before that she was known as an one of Australia's leading theater actors. In the 1970s she was a bit of a sex kitten and appeared in very popular Aussie films.

Animal Kingdom was her breakout film. It's a wonderful 2010 Australian crime drama in which she plays the matriarch/villain. She was nominated for an Oscar and probably should have won. You should check it out! (She was already well known for stage, film, and tv work in Australia before of course.)
