Reading about the true events that inspired the film, (i.e. the Pettingill family of Melbourne) got me thinking about the concept of a Crime family Queen Pin, most specifically how she maintains a hold on family of brutish men. I thought David Michod provided a nice subtle explanation for that question. Am I the only one who noticed the strange sexual tension between Smurf and her sons? I'm not saying it's the only factor that kept Smirf in power, but it did add an interesting dynamic to the equation. Here's a great example of what I'm talking about:
Animal Kingdom is an excellent film. Anyone thinking about watching should most definitely do so. Just released on DVD & Bluray in the US fyi.
