That's what the beep who were interviewed for the 451-DVD (excluding Mrs Christie, who speaks highly of Werner) would like you to believe. Truth of the matter is: Werner (due to his Vienna-theater background) had an entirely different approach to acting than the nouvelle vague-director Truffaut (Werner's interpretation of acting was that the actor is supposed to create the character, Truffaut's was that the actor is only supposed to do what the director tells him to do) Werner therefor felt that his work was unappreciated. In fact, Werner couldn't have cared less about his so-called "big US-pictures" he has always thought of himself as a theater-actor, not a movie star!!!

Apparently Oskar had done a couple of big US pictures and yes it is said that his ego did grow quite substantially. Incidentally I am currently watching Voyage of the Damned which is on tv here.

I adored Werner as an actor and for his humanist values but that's not how I read about it. Werner had a very specific way he wanted this movie to be made. My sense of it is that he was after personal catharsis, while Truffaut was after a movie that would work as art with a universal message. I think Werner "forgot" who was directing the pic and became a bit of a prima donna on the set.
I wasn't there of course. I suppose it all comes down to who you believe.

truffaut and werner made one film before fahrenheit 451, it was "jule e jim"-both were happy with the results, but after fahrenheit, truffaut started to attack werner in the press, that werner dindt acted like the director wanted it!Werner said that he cant understand why truffaut goes to the press, with that stuff-and so they started to attack themselve-werner said that truffaut wasnt able to lead the actors and he said that truffaut cant understand what happend in austria when the nazis burned all the books of judes-werner said truffaut direct like a litte child!I think werner was right
