I know we took a three year jump but I do not recall Matt leaving the police force, or leaving Mystic Falls. Was that depicted and I zoned out that episode or was this news to everyone else, too?

It was a scene in the ending montage of the S7 finale, he stated he reached out to all his contacts for Damon and Enzo, and then left.

I remember how he blamed Stefan for her death but then was shown he had been compelled to think she died in a car accident. It did not completely take and all he recalled was Stefan being there. When Stefan revealed how Matt had accidentally shot her, Matt was devastated. But I do not recall that he left everything behind. Maybe it was a quick scene at the end but with all the drama my mind draws a blank!
