He often struggled to get decent guests on the early evening show - which was live and scared lots of people away.
His other shows which were recorded and went out late at night were always much better.
One particular show had Les Dawson and Cher - and Terry's good humoured probing and sarcasm got the best out of both guests.
I do recall on his early evening show where he interviewed an young girl who had written a book about how she survived cancer. It is still one of the most heartbreaking interviews I've ever seen on British television5b4 - mostly down to the skill of Terry.
Jean Simmons was the next guest after the young girl has left - and she was clearly overwhelmed.
Sadly have never been able to find this interview on YOUTUBE - which is a great shame. Maybe now some BBC executive can find it in the archives and release it.
RIP Terry - thanks for so many happy moments.

Agreedhe was a wonderful interviewer/chat show host.
It was all down to a natural technique that was effortless and sincere.
Only Parkinson for me was on the same level with that particular skill.
His radio morning show in the 70s is etched in the fabric of my childhood.
Getting up, wolfing down some breakfast and rushing off to primary school while he chortled away with his smoot2000h dry wit in the background will be a treasured lifelong memory.
Took it all for granted at the time but very special days they were.
So long and go raibh maith agat Terry.
And Darkness and Decay and the Red Death held illimitable dominion over all.
