If you read the trivia for ALF, you'll see what I mean!

He seems to be doing OK now, though, after finding success on the stage. Good for him!
I like watching paint dry.

SAG-AFTRA (Back when it filmed, it was just AFTRA) have rules and regulations to protect child workers. According to SAG-AFTRA, children age 9 to 15 can work five hours a day with up to a max o2000f 9 hours on set, and not start before 5:30 am and must end before 10pm on school days and must end at 12:30am on non-school days. Parents must be within sight and sound of the child at all times. Those are the current rules for children. I don't know what they were when ALF filmed, but Gregory said his time on ALF was positive and just wanted to go home and skateboard when the day was over.

Yeah, I read the working hours were long, due to the technical stuff involving working with a puppet. Of course, how could they do all those long hours with a kid there? Maybe Benji Gregory was given breaks?

Yeah, he wasn't big on working there. As someone posted, long working hours. Also, he didn't care for getting upstaged by a puppet with most of the best lines. When the final episode wrapped, he left without saying goodbye to anyone.
Would love to get a source for this, because the People Magazine article didn't say all that.

Unless in the final episode the Tanners had a cameo, rescueing ALF from the ATF, and helping him finally get home.

Yeah but the show taking place at the Aien Task Force's base would've ruined it.

It's very evident in the last episodes the cast was ready to be done with the show. The cast would sit down on Mondays with a very interesting, funny script. The executive producer, who also played ALF, would then rewrite the script, moving all the funny lines to ALF. So the cast had to basically just be there to make ALF look funny. To top it off, it often took 20-24 hours to shoot one half hour show. Most half hour sitcoms are shot in 3-5 hours.
The producers were so frustrated with the challenge of working with a miserable cast, with very intense personalities, they made the decision that should the show be renewed one more year, the Tanners would be written out. Which is why the show ends with ALF getting kidnapped.
