The thing that I admire about this guy is that the more you learn about him, the more you realize that he is one of those natural born gifted artists. A truly gifted artist in every sense of the word. Not only is he a great singer, but also a very talented song writer, music-video director, thespian, and feature film director. It is clearly what he was born to do.
I own most of his albums that he has released over his 20-some year career, and let me tell you, you look up the word "versatile" in the dictionary, and there his picture will be. I don't really consider him a "country" singer, I consider him an artist. Some of his stuff is very much old-school country, whereas some of his other songs sound like rock n roll, blues, or pop. He writes most of his own material, which further proves my point that he is a versatile artist. I think that no matter what your tastes, he is one of those that pretty much anyone can find something to admire.
He should also be given credit for being a fascinatingly intelligent, down-to-earth, and sweet-natured human being. You watch him during any of his interviews, and he is clearly all of these things. You never hear-tell of this guy getting in trouble with the law, getting put in rehab, treating his fans badly, or being arrogant, rude, or losing his mind like Christian Bale, Mel Gibson, or Allec Baldwin.
It disappoints me that someone like him would be so underrated, yet some head-in-the-clouds weirdo like Micheal Jackson suddenly goes from being the butt of everyones jokes to being a God just because he died. What a world we live in, huh? Go figure.

Amen! I've been a huge fan of his since "Guitars, Cadillacs, etc, etc" was first released. Very much a thinking man's artist. I, for one, don't mind the fact that he's never really been 100% mainstream, because that just confirms that those of us who've been following him closely throughout his career have a bit more discerning taste and aren't slaves to everything pop in culture.

That's all very true about Dwight and his versatile talent for creating, performing and touring, and without the fame going to his head.
I haven't seen any of his acting roles outside of his early song videos, but Dwight does it all even back then, before IMDb ever heard of him, from his duet with Buck Owens through his Guitars and Cadillac period, and onward and onwar1354d.
When many think Dwight Yoakam, they most likely consider his early years, when Country music was more universal than it has been over the past couple of decades, and nobody knows whatever became of the popular Country stars today.
But, as you both say, Dwight transcends genre limitations and appeals to just about any audience who appreciates fine talent and performers.

I agree with you completely.
He can't be put into a single category and because of that, people don't know how to take him. Time Magazine said it best when they called him "a true Renaissance man."
