When I was a kid I heard that Frank Zappa ate poop onstage. My high school geometry teacher swore his friend was at that concert and it was at Lincoln Center. That guy was such a tool. I should have known he was lying when he claimed he had a friend.
The Gross-Out Contest
Claim:
Frank Zappa once won a "gross-out contest" by eating excrement on stage.
Status:
False.
Frank Zappa said in 1989:
I was in a London club called the Speak Easy in 1967 or '68. A member of a group called the Flock, recording for Columbia at the time, came over to me and said:
"You're fantastic. When I heard about you eating that beep on stage, I thought, 'That guy is way, way out there.'"
I said, "I never ate beep on stage." He looked really depressed like I had just broken his heart.
Variations:

Zappa5b4's contest opponent varies, with the names Captain Beefheart and Alice Cooper being frequently mentioned.

The most common version of this legend has the challenger defecating on stage, with Zappa winning the title by eating the results. Some versions describe Zappa's opponent as performing a less scatological act, and Zappa wins merely by defecating in front of the audience.

A variety of actions (other than defecating) are ascribed to the first contestant, with acts of animal cruelty (such as stepping on baby chickens or strangling a puppy) being common.
Origins:
This legend originated in the mid-1960s, no doubt inspired by the eccentricities of Frank Zappa's music and appearance. As Zappa himself wrote, however:
For the record, folks: I never took a beep on stage, and the closest I ever came to eating beep anywhere was at a Holiday Inn buffet in Fayetteville, North Carolina, in 1973.

I got SO sick and tired of hearing about this rumour. A friend of mine used to tell me anytime Zappa or his music was mentioned, "You know, he ate some crap on stage once, yeah, it's true, I even saw a photo of it!". This was before it could be denied or confirmed using the internet, but just the statement alone was enough for people to disregard the man and his music completely, which is a shame. At the time, I thought "Well if he did really see such a photo, I can easily imagine it being some kind of prank using a prop like a chocolate bar, for whatever reason" because I understood, especially with The Mothers, there was a lot of on-stage mayhem with costumes and props being used, and some very outrageous antics. I wouldn't rule it out, but I would say it was a prank, at best.
Anyway, I've spent a LOT of time Googling for such a photo, and I never found anything. If it were true, it would be out there, definitely. Everyone has seen the toilet photo, but this is not the same thing at all. I'm absolutely convinced there is NO photo, NO evidence, and it's nothing but a nasty rumour started by and perpetuated by people who simply can't stand Zappa.
I only want to say this so that nobody else spends time Googling for this photo, because it's not a pleasant thing to need to be searching for. Please trust me, I already did it for you. It does not exist.

Yeah and Alice Cooper never killed a chicken on-stage, either - for a long time, he just didn't bother to deny the persistent hearsay because Zappa had insisted he shouldn't let anybody on.
