Chinese scriptwriters are very creative. He died in A Better Tomorrow too but still appeared in a sequel.

I thought Chow Yun Fat's character died? How could he have "turned it down"?

News so far. Ang Lee is not directing it. Michelle Yeoh is confirmed in her original role. Chow Yun Fatt tunred down the offer and Donnie Yen will be replacing him. Latest news recently, announced Zhang Ziyi, whose role had already died will be back as "guest star" to play a small part with the same role with flashback scenes. They probably need her name to sell. Don't be surprised if the final film produced will have her part "enlarged" just like the original CTHD.
