"Home" is where your parents are!
My nephews are confident and have happy marriages and successful careers, yet they were raised "all around the world" since my BIL was in the military, and some of their housing was just plain yukky.

As great as it may sound to have so many palaces or castles or whatever
These boys had lots of places to stay, but no home. I don't envy them.

Anyone else think that something maybe lost to children who didn't have a nice homey-small family home where they lived 365 days a year and could enjoy going into every single room? Then again, to them having 4 or 5 estates available to them was normal.

He was a kid, he lived at Buckingham palace
He was a teenager, he lived at Keningston Palace/St. James Palace until his mom died in '97
Now still at his adulthood, he lives at Clarence House
I'm not sure which he lived in his teenager days before his mom died?
Does it helps you?

The Queen's official home is Buckingham Palace in London but her favourite home is Windsor Castle, in Berkshire.
The Queen spends Christmas with the family at Sandringham in Norfolk, and stays there mostly, until February.
In Scotland the Queen has Balmoral Castle, where she stays for the summer, and the Palace of Holyroodhouse (NOT Holyrood House) where she stays for about a week each year before going to Balmoral.
St. James' Palace holds the offices of Princess Alexandra and her husband, and the Prince of Wales
Clarence House is within the grounds of St. James' Palace and the Queen Mother lived here until her death - now Prince Charles, Camilla, William and Harry live there although Prince Charles spends quite a bit at his private home Highgrove.
Kensington Palace was where Princess Diana lived until her death, and it is still lived in by the Duke and Duchess of Glouscester, the Duke and Duchess of Kent and Prince and Princess Michael of Kent as their London bases, although i'm pretty sure they all have bigger mansion type houses outside London. Princess Margaret and Princess Alice also lived here until they died.
There are also other palaces, houses etc which are Royal Places but either aren't used, used for other purposes, no longer belong to the Royal family, are private residences or are for purely Ceremonial purposes:

Abergavenny Castle (burnt down 1403)

Audley End House (Charles II bought it then it later reverted to the Suffolk family)

The Banqueting House (Whitehall Palace)

Blenheim Palace (originally the Royal manor of Woodstock - Queen Anne gave it to the Duke of Malborough after he defeated the King of France at Blenheim. Blenheim Palace was then built by the Duke of Marlborough on this land)

Brighton Pavilion (commissioned by George IV when he was Prince of Wales)

Caernarvon Castle (where the eldest son of the monarch is invested as Prince of Wales)

Caerphilly Castle (Wales)

Castle of Mey (bought by the Queen Mother in 1952 as a summer house to save it from demolition)

Eltham Palace (country Palace of some Medieval kings)

Glamis Castle (ancestral home of the Earls of Strathmore - Queen Mother was born here as was Princess Margaret - childhood home of Queen Mother)

Hampton Court Palace (favourite country home of Henry VIII - 5 of his 6 wives lived here. last used by George II)

Harlech Castle (Wales)

Hatfield House (built by the infamous Robert Cecil, who was Elizabeth I's main advisor - holds loads of letters and portraits of Tudor kings and queens)

Kew Palace (originally bought by George III to house some of his many children)

Linlithgow Palace (a favourite of the Stuart kings of Scotland)

Marlborough House (home at some point to Edward VII and the George V, but generally used for widows - Queen Adelaide after the death of William IV, Queen Alexandra after the death of Edward VII, and Queen Mary after the death of George V. now used for government meetings)

Osborne House (designed by Prince Albert for his wife Queen Victoria; she died here in 1901)

Stirling Castle (one of the most important strongholds in the realm of Scotland, it was a Scottish Royal Residence until the crowns of England and Scotland merged in 1903 - then it ceased to be a royal residence - recently restored)

Tower of London (used as fortress and Palace until Tudor times when Henry VII's queen died in childbirth here, then Elizabeth I was imprisoned here as a child so wasnt too fond of the place - people imprisoned and executed here (like some of Henry VIII's wives) - today holds the Crown Jewels)
Quite a few of them hold museums of sorts, or exhibitions or that kind of thing.
This list should be mostly correct, although don't hold me to it being spot on.
