I know this Slash dot, the article specifically lists "Gregg's" as the baker of these doughnuts and that particular baking brand didn't do them until the mid 2000's
If anything Gregg's started doing them as a way to wipe out Dunkin', Baskin Robbins and Krispy Kreme making inroads on their territory
To the discerning eye this is as preposterous as saying someone had chips, cheese and coleslaw at a party in the 1970s

Krispy Kreme was established in 1937, Juan.
Dunkin' was 1950. Existed for a while now.

Gregg's only started doing ring doughnut in 2006, so we've got 20 years of potential boyfriends to whittle down from.
