Gwendolyn Yeo read the unabridged Joy Luck Club for Books on Tape or Recorded Books (or one of those). I don't know who hired her for that reading, but it was just downright horrible. Her different voice characterizations are AWFUL!!
especially the men's characters, whiny, nasally, and cartoonish.
and the turtle in the pond (unlistenable.). I had to shut the volume down on some parts completely until they were through, they were so bad.
If you think I'm being overly harsh, just borrow a copy of the CD from the local library and give it a listen. tell me I'm wrong.
Maybe it wasn't her fault, but the fault of the producers of the audio book (if there were any) for hiring her, and then not correcting her pronounciation of some common English words she got wrong (for example, granite, is not produced
GRAN-ITE (as in "kite") counter top. Thats just one example of many.
Amy Tan, the author, did a tremendously better job on her own reading of her abridged version. I wish she had done the unabridged as well.
just my two cents.

I thought she did a great job. And to her credit, because there were a boatload of different characters she had to handle.

All I'm saying is, she can't read in different characterizations, and make them sound like plausible human beings.
It wasn't the editing or the production or anything else. It was just a poor job of reading the book, and they should have picked someone else.
Nice that you liked it. She might be very good at ad campaigns that don't need dramatazation; but I still think she should stay away from playing characters on audio.
I'm not alone in this regard. check out the reviews on www.audible.com for this audiobook.

I find it strange that you're saying her voice in the audio book sounded "so awful" since I've listened to it many times and liked her voice enough to hire her through my company to have her voice used for our entire advertising campaign. It was been such a success and I have only heard great feedback. I find that you must either have something out for her personally or you're a very pety person. As for the granite comment, all I have to say is: tomato, toma(H)to you apparently understood it.

Gwendolyn Yeo like so many other talented artists is subj1908ected to the editing process (and opinions) of directors, editors and producers. So while we dutifully do our best work, remaining as present, honest and yes, vulnerable as possible in our performances, we often have little or no control over the final product. We show up on set, in the studio or in the booth day after day and do our best work. That's our job. If our best work ends up on the cutting room floor, that's just the way it goes. We accept that. What we find hard to accept is fielding the harsh, hurtful opinions voiced by individuals like ladyofthelake66.
I'd like to believe we all do our best in life and sometimes that is just not enough. I'm sure that ladyofthelake66 was doing her best when she wrote "not produced" rather than "pronounced."
Just my opinionand it's probably worth about two cents, as well.
