I knew Jeff in high school also, and yes, he did go to NYU for film school, but no, his teacher did not die of AIDS, it was cancer. And believe me, I visited that man in the hospital (so please stop the rumors).
Jeff gave a pretty cool eulogy at this man's funeral, but other than that, not much can be said about him because he's just getting started.

Jeff is an NYU grad who is a 1st time screenwriter. I believe he has a development deeal with David O. Russell and Fox Searchlight. I know this because we were roomates at NYU. He has tons of talent and will be directing major motion pictures in the near future.
