I have never been that big of a fan of J Smith. Maybe because his father is just so talented and iseems to cast a large shadow.
Yet, I've been watching The Get Down and he is really good as his character Rumi. He has his own style, seems very comfortable with the group of people he is working with, and comes across very believable in his role. As a matter of fact, I forgot who he was by the third episode.
I think it's very hard for someone to portray a character on the screen when that person is also vocal as him/herself in public, especially if the person's views are not popular.
Maybe if no one had heard of Jaden Smith before this role or another role people might have a different opinion of him?
