that she is one of those people, though lovely, seem older than they are. She came across as being seriously older than her lover in THE KNICK (which I adored and hate having had it come to an end) and now, in American Gothic, she appears the same age as Madsen who is playing her mother.

I came here to say this. She doesn't look5b4 as young as her character seems to be in The Knick.

I do see what you are saying to a certain degree, especially regarding the ageing process. However, there is just something about her acting that is off for me; there is a sort of underlying desperation present in all her performances that isn't always true to the character.
To be fair, however, she had some very good moments in THE KNICK, which I miss terribly. I really hate that they didn't care enough to find a way to continue the story, especially ending it with the rushed manner that they did.( it felt as though they just swept every scrap of an idea and bits of each character into a bloody pile just to be done with it!)

I disagree, I've just finished watching episode two and in the funeral service scene in the church where Juliet is sitting right next to Virginia I agree she's perfectly cast as her daughter looks-wise but she looks 20 years younger. Juliet is 36 years old, yes she has a mature serious look to her but she looks her age, not older. Her face is smooth as porcelain and there no age lines around her neck her figure is sleek and thin of a young woman and she's a very very beautiful woman! Virginia Madsen is very beautiful as well but she's obviously a mature woman in her 50's, a very well preserved 50's but 50's nonetheless. There's beauty to be found in each decade of a person's life. It's possible to look as best as we can for our age as well. We all age, it's one of the things we can't control no matter how much money we have. It's very humbling to age and grow old but there's much wisdom about life that one gains in the process.
