Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old man accused of gunning down UnitedHealthCare CEO Brian Thompson in front of a New York City hotel, appeared in court Friday for the first time since he was arraigned in December on state murder and terror charges.
Mangione, who has pleaded not guilty, entered the Manhattan courtroom with shackles on his hands and feet. He wore a bulletproof vest over a green sweater, a white shirt and khaki pants.
Judge Gregory Carro denied a request from one of Mangione's attorneys to remove the shackles.
Prosecutors started the hearing by listing the evidence they have so far sent over to Mangione's lawyers, including body camera footage and medical examiner forensic files. Karen Friedman Agnifilo, Mangione's lead attorney, said her team still needed more materials from prosecutors.

Yep. They sure do, and they earned every ounce of anger we the people have towards them! They're horrible. They treat people like numbers and as if we're not human beings. They also really only want to pay for things when our health gets really bad, and we need expensive surgeries and treatments. When we're "mostly" healthy and looking for preventative treatment, they're not interested in helping to keep us healthy and out of the doctors' offices and out of the hospital, but they'll wait to approve a $30,000 operation. It's crazy. And of course, United HealthCare is one of the absolute worst companies out there with an extremely high rate of claim denials. I think they're all crooked, though.

I hate generalisations, generally speaking, but it's really difficult to think otherwise when you see where the big bucks are going and who is making the most money, especially at the expense of the patients.

I would like to see the ones who are intentionally abusing the system held accountable, but I would also like to see changes made, including paying the nurses and techs living wages, hire sufficient staff to manage hospitals and nursing homes, train them properly, maintain a proper ration of staff-to-patient (which is never, ever done), keep equipment up to date, and treat people humanely. Too often, the focus is divided so heavy between the overhead to maintain a profit and then the actual people involved who are doing the actual care - and those people are so overworked and underappreciated.
This is one area I would love to see some of that fat trimmed, especially from the "administration" with their bloated budgets, and divert that money back into the staff and redirect it to the actual patient care, where it belongs! (Can you tell I'm fired up about this issue!?)

Oh, definitely! And plenty of doctors as well. Doctors are incentivized to commit fraud with the insurance companies however, if you think about it, because insurance companies set the allowable rates that will be paid. Very often, if a patient is paying cash, the price is less, and if they're billing insurance, they'll charge more and claim it's for administrative purposes. But can you explain to me what "administrative purposes" it takes that take $4,000 to switch beds from one room to another (thus your bill for one day/night can be $8,000)? Or how about why two Tylenol tablets will be billed at $40 for pharmacy expenditures when you can buy three bottles for that price? Or how about when a doctor comes in for 5 minutes just to document on your chart that yep, he's looked at you, and the nurse's notations on your chart are there, it's another $800? Why does it cost $1,200-$3,000 for simple lab work? Ask women who have delivered children and received a bill from the hospital for $700,000 or more, even if they have a doula. I'm sure they charge $20 for each band-aid.
In the end, I understand they are a business, but this is also how corruption breeds corruption. The nurses are overworked and underpaid and the hospitals are understaffed, but the CEOs, administrators and shareholders are sure to bring home 7-8 figures.
