I'm guessing during the Civil War it became a term for all northerners, especially to southerners. I just know in California we never call ourselves "Yankees". But my sister in New Hampshire calls herself a Yankee.

Yeah that makes sense. But I've heard the term down here in Texas when describing most northerners.
