Well man, making any kind of general comment about the 'lion's share of films each year being mindless tripe' would make anyone appear stupid (or perhaps judgemental, ignorant, etc. are better words.)
There are 600 films released into American movie theaters every year (on average). A massive majority of those films are made by Hollywood studios (around 500, or 83%)
To make a sweeping statement about American films (which you've done twice now, including your reply to me) you'd have to watch, to be fair, a lions share - which I'll put at a modest 75%. And you'd have to watch the same percentage of foreign films as well. So of those 600+ films released every year, you'd have to watch at least 450 films a year - over multiple years, to have any kind of opinion on the subject.
(You could also add in the 1000 films Bollywood releases each year, to be as objective as possible.)
So if you can honestly tell me you've watched over 450 movies a year for, say the last 5 years (and why you're not a professional critic by this point), I'll totally give you the benefit of the doubt regarding your opinion on modern American movies - or movies of any sort.
In the meantime - watching 100 or so movies, scattered about the year, and assuming that's any indication of what's actually out there is completely stupid. This isn't political voter poll results, or marketing surveys - were talking literally thousands of hours of story telling, cinematography, editing, etc. - which takes actual time and patience to sit through.

I'm guessing all you watch are American action films? The way you talk about American films, and the 2 actors you cited definitely makes me think so. You realize American studios produce virtually every kind of genre you can possibly think of. Just from 2010 / 2011, do films like Tree of Life, Precious, Restrepo, Tabloid, The Descendants, Take Shelter, Hugo, Winter's Bone, Toy Story 3, Black Swan, The Kids Are Alright, etc., seem like dumb, CGI infested, explosions everywhere movies. That's a pretty easy list for me to pull off the top of my head, yet it already contradicts everything you posted in your first paragraph.
I'm assuming you don't watch many films, and probably have a some kind of bias built in that prevents you from opening your mind to what films come out of your own home country each year. To knock the U.S. for movies is like knocking the British for rock and roll. I.e. It makes you look like an idiot. Sure Coldplay sucks. And sure Transformers suck. But that's a pretty narrow view of what makes up music in the UK or movies in the U.S. Get it?
And besides all this - isn't the actress your defending the lead actress in a film about aliens, rooftop chases, CGI, huge explosionsi.e.Attack the Blocka UK filmwith British actorsmade in the UK??? I think you're point falls flat on its facecompletely.
In the end - I think you should refrain from discussing American movies at all - 'cause clearly you have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.

When Jodie Whittaker appeared in Venus I was very impressed and thought she was going to have a very good chance of being nominated for an Oscar as Best Actress in Supporting Role. She was memorable.
Then I realized she was going to compete as Best Actress in Leading Role, where she had no chance. This year that category was too strong.
I figured that after Venus, Jodie would begin to appear in bigger films from Hollywood but nothing has happened. I guess there is still time but I like that she was most acclaimed and sought after.
But perhaps all this will change this year, Jodie has two movies coming out this year and may get attention. It is "Attack the Block" and the other is One Day with Anne Hathaway.
Maybe Hollywood will bring attention to Jodie Whittaker.
