lol yeah, me too! I confused her w/ the Patil sisters and thought she was supposed to be from India. I think it's partly because her name just makes me think of India (yeah, weird, don't ask me why), and also because in the 5th, the patil sisters were giddy around Harry and went with him and Ron to to the Yule Ball, right? and So when Lavender was all friendly w/ Ron in HBP, I was thinking of the Patil sisters.
Some of what I stated may be wrong.. I haven't read the books since they came out, and the movies are a lot fresher in my mind.

No, the book does not say so.

Assuming you are female and British, I'm fairly certain you could've auditioned regardless of your race.

Seeing as the race of Lavendar Brown has absolutely no affect whatsoever on the plotlines of the HP stories (books or movies), does it really make a difference?

The only characters in the books described as being black are Angelina Johnson, Dean Thomas, and Blaise Zabini. Lavender Brown is most definitely never described as being black and with the whole snogging with Ron scene, it is clear she is white. However, she was "played" by a black actress in the third movie just for the heck of it. The only other black characters as Lee Jordan and Alicia Spinnet, although I don't believe either of them were actually described as black in the books but since they are in the movies and their is not contradiction otherwise, the probably are.

Yes, that's right, but she doesn't offer any information about the Patils IN the books. We know it because of their names and complementary information.
I'm the book they never say she is black. She is described as "very plain with brown hair"
No, they never say she's black, but that thing about "very plain with brown hair" is even more false. So you can remove the quotation marks or Rowling will sue you.

I'm fairly certain that everyone thinks she's black because she was played by a black actress in Prisoner of Azkaban (Jennifer Smith). Matilda's friend was a girl named Lavender (and I guess her name is actually Lavender Brown in the book), and she was played by a black girl.
I guess I imagined the Harry Potter Lavender Brown as an older Matilda Lavender Brown.

No I have no idea why so many people think that Lavender is supposed to be black. If you remember in Half Blood Prince, at one point when Ron and Lavender are making out (I'm sorry, I think "snogging" is too ridiculous to say), it says something like "they were wrapped so tightly around each other that you couldn't tell whose hands belonged to who" if Lavender was black then it would be pretty easy to tell which hands belonged to which person.

The books don't mention race at all. What does it matter anyway? So what if she was black in the first place? (she didn't have a big role!) What matters is whether she can ACT the part of Lavender Brown. (all soppy and "drunk on Ron") Tsk. It's like Katie Leung and her scottish accent all over again.

I always thought she was black while reading the books - but I suppose it's because the first (and only other) time I ever heard the name Lavender was in the movie Mathilda, and that character was mixed.
Same here. That's part of the reason why I always pictured Lavender as being African-American. It had nothing to do with her last name, I know a Caucasian girl with the last name Brown, but I just always pictured Lavender to be African-American for some reason.
I say what I want. I do what I want. I get what I want. End of story.

I always thought she was black too. That is just too weird that so many of us pictured her as one thing when it clearly (well at least according to a ton of people on this board) never gave a description of her.
And obviously someone's last name (unless clearly ethnic like Chang or Patil) has little to do with what they look like. I didn't picture Lavender as black just because her last name was Brown. How silly would that be?
