I've just watched it again and I didn't catch whether Tom had met Sandy before he travelled to the island. Or whether he had gone there for peace and quiet.

Yes!
Tom seemed to have more of a relationship with Sandy's little sister than he did with her. Makes you wonder what they had in common and how they ever met.
