A fantastic film noir about a hustler who comes up with a scheme to try and control wrestling in London. Will he find the life of ease and plenty that he craves? Or will his greed and deceit doom him? Richard Widmark gives a dynamic, brilliant performance as the ambitious hustler. Wonderful supporting performances from Francis L. Sullivan, Gene Tierney, Stanislaus Zbyszko and Googie Withers, all of whom are top notch. Masterful direction by Jules Dassin and a sharp, well written screenplay further enhance the film. It is beautifully shot and features a great score. A masterpiece with no false notes. 10/10.

Don't know if I would call it a masterpiece, but I do think it's an excellent film for all the reasons you mention. I haven't seen it in a long while, but I would enjoy seeing it again.
