How many of us have bought older/more obscure films after discussion on here which we would not otherwise have bought?
How many people live near a bricks and mortar option where we can find older/more obscure films?
I guess with Netflix etc who needs DVD/blu ray?
I'm living in the past with my classics. I'm a crying dinosaur.
Think it's heading towards turn on entertainment system, tick tits, tick violence, tick include favourite stars, tick haven't seen, tick released within decade, tick English language, tick my genres, tick best match, hit search and there you have your fifty titles and selecting your content has never been easier.

Speaking of killing, the end of the IMDB message boards is going to be a death knell for interest in classic films and TV among younger people, as the boards offer a newbie, especially a younger person of the non-trollish type, a wonderful way to learn about old films and TV from people who really know their stuff.
You're right, my friend: there's going to be a trickle down from this, and it won't be money, it will be apathy. There's education in these here boards, and it will be lost when they vanish. A dreadful move on Amazon's part. It's going to hurt them in the long run, dumb down our culture even more, but then, who knows?maybe that's the idea
.

That word 'content' comes to mind
On a practical note, its the DVD/Blu Ray commmentaries and other special features that I'll miss the most. Sure, a lot of it is pure rubbish but I've gained a lot of insight from the good stuff. Plus without a physical component I imagine I'd end up not watching things I really ought to watch the same way I've not listened to albums once they've dissapeared into my iTunes which didn't happen when I proudly displayed my cds - and before that cassettes and vinyl - on a shelf. Yeah, I'm a weeping dinasaur.

Eloquently put, doomsayer. Shudder. Distant thunder rolling. Dark laughter echoing from below.

I would bet that all of the backlist films they have combined sell less in a given time period than the latest
Star Wars
film alone will, though. And movies - physical media in general - are not something they care much about anymore; of course they'd like to sell a billion dollars worth of everything but Amazon more than any company has been aggressively trying to get people to give up their books, cds and dvds/blu and go digital/streaming on all of it. So I really don't think they care even slightly, their all-digital/no-physical future is probably a lot more profitable, and when it's all digital it really doesn't matter what product you're buying.
Here's to the fools who dream
