If this character had been more developed, it would have been a major asset to the cast.
Thinking that she learns to kill by necessity, but keeps the "good" if that makes sense to counteract and keep Carl in line. Carl needs to be questioned on alot of what he is doing, and that could have been Sophia's job.
While I enjoy this show, there's very few characters that have any redeeming value. Sophia could have been that one, and the writers really screwed up with this character.

Guess that episode where she get lost (What Lies Ahead) is as much as development we got from her.
She didn't talk too much during season one, and I admit I hardly care about her until the Second Season first chapter. I guess because that was gonna be her last appearance while being alive, she was given a little more lines.
The whole Grand Canyon story just make you feel more for her, as she, while living in the middle of a zombie apocalypse, still saw the world as a child. Later on, I realized she will never be able to see the Grand Canyon as Rick promised to her.

I have to agree, I have been watching Walking Dead and got to this episode today. Aside from the fact by this time in the series, this show has jumped the shark. Sophia was a bad kill, and the show lost something.
The other problem is that this whole scenario points out one of the most glaring problems with this show, they don't develop the minor characters well enough.
While Sophia was a LITTLE better known than the kid zombie at the beginning of the series, she was still pretty much an unknown who appeared out of nowhere about 4 episodes in.

She freaked out because there were two walkers chasing after her! After that, Rick gave her directions to get back with the others if he didn't return in a while.
I know, she didn't wait for him and get out of her hiding spot as soon 5b4as he lure the two walkers away from her, but she didn't want to be let by her own, and she ACTUALLY tried to do what Rick told her to do.
Her death affected me, no matter how minor, unspoken or not-important her character was. She was to the group the innocence and hope they lost after the Apocalypse.
Also, I feel sorry for her, just think about it: it must have been horrible (being the scared little girl she was) to be wandering all alone in the woods, unable to find your way back to your mother. Then, night coming down, you're still lost, and unexpectedly you are attacked and bitten in the shoulder by the very same (type of) creatures you were SAVED from just moments ago, breaking free from your agressor and start to run while you're bleeding and getting the fever from the infection, until you finally die, all alone, not being able to at least have your mother by your side. All of this, and Sophia was just a 12 years old girl.

If you think about it, Sophia set in motion the deaths of a lot of characters and destroyed the peaceful existence that Herschel's family had on the farm.
First she freaked out and ran into the woods, then she didn't stay put when Rick told her he would come back and get her. Then she didn't climb a tree or something and wait for them to find her while safe from the walkers.
If she doesn't run off, she doesn't turn into a walker, Carl doesn't get shot by Otis, Otis doesn't get killed by Shane, the walker army walks right past Herschel's farm without stopping (no gunshot when Carl shoots the Shane, Dale doesn't die, Shane doesn't die, none of Herschel's family dies, Herschel doesn't start drinking again, etc., etc.
"See all the trouble you caused young lady!!" Just kidding.
Interesting to see the turn of events from this one action. Granted, if she doesn't run off, Season 2 would have been just like Season 1.

Well if one shall follow Comic Canon as for yet Sophia still lives.
So o1ebcne can see that way she never died.
If they now should change the plot in the tv format it would have been cooler if the mother had found out alone tha she was a Zombie and tried to hide it for the rest of the survivors.
Trying to treat her as a daughter still.
If one should follow the Comic Carol did get a little Crazy later on anyway.
So would have been cooler if they kept Sophia "alive" for a couple of episode more and Carol would have kept her isolated for a while keeping her illusion of her daughter still alive.

Her death did not affect me
We already saw a kid zombie death in the very first episode.
I just wish they had given her more spotlight, the first 7 episodes she rarley spoke at all.
If they fleshed out her character more I would have actually cared more for her death.

True, true Even the boy is getting jaded and world-wise. He told his mom that "everything is food for something else" while they fed the chickens. I would love to know what the rationale was for killing her off.

I think they are going to find out that writing off Sophia will hurt them in the long run. Sophia gave them someone, who even in this world, looked at it as a child, full of wonder and innocence, a real contrast with others who see the world as a kind of hell, or a place to conquer.

Finally! Someone actually talking about the topic!!! I agree, she was a sweety and her loss could hurt the show At least it was numbnuts (that let her get lost in the first place!!!) that capped her. He lost her and let her become a walker, he had to take care of it!
And what the hell?!?! Hershel is a deluded moron-"cure" people of being dead?!?! I guess his MCATS were too danged low, that's why he went to be a vet instead of a real doctor
