I never liked his stuff. Weakest member of the Frankfurt School.
And I prefer Schopenhauer.

He is certainly not light reading! I tried my hand at Theory of Communicative Action and gave up. He's a bit like Frederic Jameson–they both have incredible range, but I find them both disappointing. Good to see you, Leopold!

Adorno is my favorite of Frankfurt school as well.
I have not read Habermas directly, familiar with his thought thought reading about his interaction with and alteration of Hegel, as well as the famous Habermas vs Rawls.
Yes, this is Patrick. My real first name is Leopold/Leo.

I think Rorty is quite brilliant ( I have his
Contingency, Irony and Solidarity
and I read
Philosophy and the Mirror of Nature
years ago) but a bit of an opportunist and a smooth operator. He definitely gets Habermas right!

I've never read Habermas; I only know of his work through constant mentions by Richard Rorty, who I've read quite a lot of. I know you don't care for Rorty, but he seems to share your disdain for the "rapprochement with liberalism" thing in Habermas' writing.

I wouldn't say he was brilliant: he was very hardworking. If you compare him to Adorno (for my money the most brilliant of the Frankfurters) he seems really limited. Same thing applies to Walter Benjamin, whom I put, with Marcuse, in second place. Even Horkheimer was smarter than Habermas. Habermas was also always trying to find a rapprochement with liberalism, which I find odd. There was a time (when I was younger) when I loved
Structural Transformation of the Public Sphere
(I used it heavily for my thesis) and
The Philosophical Discourse of Modernity
, but I soon became disenchanted with him.
P.S. Is this you, Patrick? Who the **** else reads Habermas here?????

I know him and his ideas from Habermas VS Rawls and from his engagement with Hegels thought and his own versions of Hegels ideas. He's not one of my inspirations but he was still obviously brilliant.
He lived to be 96 years old! What a life.
I hope Zizek lives to be as old.
