I did not particularly like the effects in that film, but I don't know much about special effects, CGI, etc.

I think they look purposefully more comic book-y. Almost saturated to the point that it came directly out of a panel.

Care to qualify what you mean by bad?
Was the too much specularity? Were the dielectric shaders wrong?
