i'm watching this film right now. i've already seen it when it was in the theatres here. it's such a good, very poignant and touching and empowering film about a society that oppresses and discriminates women and girls in Saudi Arabia.
Wadjda is a 10-year-old girl living in a suburb of Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. After a fight with her friend Abdullah, a neighborhood boy she shouldn’t be playing with, Wadjda sees a beautiful green bicycle for sale. She wants the bicycle desperately so that she can beat Abdullah in a race. But Wadjda’s mother won’t allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue. So Wadjda decides to try and raise the money herself…

Well I suppose if all girls were riding bicycles they could be having premarital sex and blame the broken hymen on bicycle riding.

dude, patriarchal systems are ****ing bizarre and absolutely oppressive in every aspect of a girl's and woman's life. the female body is property of the man in islamistic countries and Saudi Arabia is one of the worst.
suck it.

Bizarre they would think a broken hymen caused by a bicycle seat would render the girl a slut.

A rough bump could break the hymen, this can happen by horseback riding too.
You know this kind of thing could get a girl killed in some countries.

Why is a bicycle dangerous to a girl’s virtue? Something about the shape of the bicycle seat?

i've rated it 8/10 initially and i think i'm gonna raise it to 9/10 upon rewatch. it's just such a film with really sweet and heart-warming moments amidst a cold and cruel world.
suck it.
