Although it didn’t spoil the film for me I think it’s weird that he starts off baby sized and then goes back to child and then baby size as he grows old and becomes senile.

No it was that he had that ailment where he aged backwards. For realism, humans are very small when they are born because they have to exit mom's vagina. That is why Benjamin had the appearance of a very old person when he was an infant.
