I used to be a big fan of Tim Burton a few years back.
My favorite is Ed Wood by far, no question. My least favorite would be Batman and Batman Returns simply because i'm not huge on the superhero thing.
Anyway i'll give this new one a watch and post back when i'm finished.

Samuel L. Jackson, and even though he's in contacts and a fright wig, he still plays the same exact Sam Jackson character he's played innumerable times a black man yelling. You'd think a director would tell him at some point "Sam . . . you know, mix it up or something."
Yeah it was SLJ from Pulp Fiction in a Halloween costume.

It's not that great, and neither is the book. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go to it in 3D, as I waited too long and no theater had it. I only go to the 3D versions when a film has it, and that can make a bad or marginal film watchable. This movie in 2D fell flat in more ways than one. In a supporting role is Samuel L. Jackson, and even though he's in contacts and a fright wig, he still plays the same exact Sam Jackson character he's played innumerable times a black man yelling. You'd think a director would tell him at some point "Sam . . . you know, mix it up or something."

The movie was a good adaptation of the book in its first half. After that it sort of goes off in a different direction, which is ok, since Burton doesn't seem to want to do sequels and the ending of the book is very much setting up a series. Overall the movie works well enough, but other than some flashes of brilliance it doesn't really rise up the sort of 'teen lit' level of its source (or up to Burton's best work), even though that's a better example of that sort of book.
And yeah the photo gimmick is actually a really interesting way to create a book. It's pretty cool. But I haven't read past the first one.
But I'll watch Eva Green do just about anything. I think she's amazing.

Haven't seen the movie, but I enjoyed the book it's based on, and the sequel. Really liked the use of old photos has part of the storytelling.

I saw it on a big screen for the first time a couple of months ago, and it's still a great deal of fun. Such a perfect version of a living cartoon, with a great nonsense logic, and visual sensibility and inventiveness. Still looks great too.
But not nearly my favorite Burton.

all the time.
