After about five years of consideration and repeated viewings (all under the influence of course) this film has finally surpassed the mighty John Carpenter effort for me to take the #1. I've known for a while but it's hard to break decades of loyalty.
A masterfully crafted horror film. The absolute example of the unseen terror, sublime pov shots, legendary obscene phone call scenes, likeable and strong characters, extremely sexy and brave female protagonist, an amazing setting in an iconic creepy house, great "piano strike"'score mix and xmas oldschool songs twisted and defiled, Art Hindle's fur coat, mother#cking John Saxon, dark themes of rape and incest, the perfect red herring and above all else a tense and crushing atmosphere. A simple premise beautiful in it's simplicity.
I guess even more important again and where a horror film rises and falls is the strength of it's villain and the monstrously creepy Billy is a close second in madness only to Michael in my opinion although his terror lies even futher in shadows and ambiguity. He personifies random motiveless mayhem, insanity, sickness, perversion and even omnipotence I have yet to see rivaled.
I know little about it's inpact on release but I imagine there were a select few who were utterly crushed by it and I envy them. It crushes me in the best possible way every Christmas night with a few whiskies and smokes. It always leaves a haunting impression on me for days on end. Something I cannot say about Halloween as much as it pains me to say.

Cool.
I knew it was awesome when I watched it ten years ago. Then I watched many more horror movies and they rarely got better. This chick I live with (and who knows where SHE came from or how I am apparently already in love with her in a reciprocal way) won't even watch it again. She loves scary movies but this one was too scary for her. It is aweseome

Yep, yep, and yep.
As you may remember, I watched it about 2 weeks ago and it never fails to impress. In fact, it actually manages to get better. Don't know how it can, since I've had it at a 10 for several years now. Can a perfect 10 get continually better? After all, there's nowhere to go. Maybe the fact that it doesn't disappoint even one iota, when many, many favorites have in the past, is what makes it truly special.
Perhaps there'll come a day when it does disappoint a bit, but I hope I'm dead by then, looking out an attic window with a plastic bag over my head. Seasons Greetings!!!

It's been an awesome season! Things went my way in court the other week. But then I got hospitalized for a skin infection. But then I got out, so all is good. Now I'm wrestling with this horrenously itchy rash all over my body from the antibiotics I was given in the hospital (vancomycin - "Red Man Syndrome"). Just got out from an oatmeal bath. I'm a mess! LOL.

Oooh The Wailing. I had an 8 in mind as i watched it. I've never rated a South Korean flick so low if the truth may be told. What can I say it left me wanting. I expected SK greatness and it was just OK. Solid for sure but nothing huge.
Take that in though, lowest rated SK flick a 7. They are extremely good filmmakers.

It has not been released in the UK on blu-ray yet and yes the US version is region locked. I don't have a region free player (which is probably a good thing actually as I would soon be broke
).. However Arrow Video over here are releasing classic horrors left, right and centre.. so hopefully it will only be time.
I notice you rate
The Wailing
the same as me. Curious to know what your main issue was with it that stopped it from being an 8 or 9?
