This is a good movie. I was expecting a good 80's slasher but it turned out to be much more. I had no idea going into this that it would be more of a character study inside the maniac's mind than anything else. Still, it turned out to be one of the best horror films I watched for my October Challenge. I knew Tom Savini did the makeup and gore, and boy, did he ever deliver. The acting is great - Joe Spinell was terrifying! That last scene was wicked!

I have seen it during summer but already forgot a lot. While I bet it's good in its genre it didn't really interest me at all.

I like how it's carefully hinted at that Frank is the apartment building landlord. In one particular scene, you see a buncha keys hanging up on a pegboard by his front door. I that thought that was a neat, subtle touch. Never noticed it until someone said it on the DVD commentary.

Fantastic film. Makes my top 50 horror films. The remake while not quite being on the same level is pretty damn good as well.

I am really interested in the remake now. Elijah Wood seems a strange choice but he was really creepy in "Sin City".

Oh god yes. I always feel like I can smell his apartment and his BO through the screen. Ugh all that sweaty bedding and those scalps just lying around. Blegh. I always feel so bad for that hooker. Not because
he killed her, but because she had to roll around in bed with his big, smelly body before she died. Awful way to go.
8.5/10
I agree with the other poster about the remake. It's a great re-imagining. I don't think it's better (7.5/10), but I was pleasnatly surprised by how much I liked it. I slept on it for a couple of years. Didn't think it would be much of an experience and turned my nose up at the idea of Elijah Wood playing a serial killer (eventhough I usually love him), but I was wrong. He managed to genuinely creep me out. His presence was completely different from Spinel's, who was large, and looming. Wood had an unassuming creepiness. I thought he pulled it off. And going in, I had no idea that it was going to be from the first person perspective. That was a great choice. I love the final shot.

This movie always makes me want to take a shower. So realistic and gritty. The character of Frank is so creepy and Joe Spinell is bone chilling.

Simple?
I don't think so.
It's urban paranoia. It's slasher / serial killer. It tackles abusive childhoods. Well, maybe not "tackles," but it's there. Frank is also multi-dimensional. He isn't "just" a bloodthirsty murderer.
It's also a touching love story. And just when you think the movie is (fairly) grounded in reality, it throws us for a loop with a topsy turvy fantastical gore-soaked climax.
There's definitely more to it than meets the eye. It didn't get a top 40 hit written after it for nothin'.
You got the wrong guy, mang. I don't come off no banana boat.
