I don't remember the character you are talking about specifically, but I do remember the scene and being amused at how the boy eats like 5 or 6 hot dogs for the chance of running into the girl.

I also enjoyed seeing Burt Kwouk of the Pink Panther's Cato fame as the hot dog vendor.

Marvelously gritty teen coming of age film. Jane Asher is fabulous in her role, plus a very memorable cameo appearance by Diana Dors.

The film does a great job of teetering on the sweetness and the obsessiveness of first love. He was in love and she was a tease. Won't go any further than that. The two leads gave excellent performances.
The scene with the diamond in the snow was breathtaking. And the bathhouse milieu was dead on.

Yes. A powerful and disturbing film indeed.

I've seen The Deep End with Tilda Swinton and it's superb.
