Open Rage (2003),
my next favorite western is
Broken Trail (2006)
again with Duvall, kind of playing the same character more or less.
Aces N' Eights (2008)
Is a pretty good western with a nice cast led by Ernest Borgnine.
Appaloosa (2008)
is pretty good.
The Salvation (2014
) is probably the last best formula western I've seen.
but yeah, Open Range is tough one to top so far.
I've read
Diablo (2015)
get some middling reviews but yet to see it myself.
I'm still waiting to see
In a Valley of Violence (2016)

• crossing my fingers Travolta and Ethan Hawke made a good one.

I greatly dislike the remakes 3:10 To Yuma and True Grit. Also in my dislike column in Django Unchained. Mainly because of my aversion to Django, I have not cared to see The Hateful Eight.
Im still thinking about The Revenant. A lot of good things about it but I had my thumb on the fast-forward scan button for much of the runtime.

I concur, but I would rate
Django Unchained
as better than both ("great" as opposed to "very good.")
Hostiles
, from last year, is also a contender (a "very good" Western).

It's unfortunate that two of the best candidates (
3:10 to Yuma
,
True Grit
) are remakes.
The Hateful Eight
and
The Revenant
are true contenders.
I'm also a big fan of
Seraphim Falls
and
Bone Tomahawk
