to me, stalker was more like a bunch of fantasy/metaphor with sort of a background of constant tension.
anyways, there was a pretty good version of war and peace made into a film series. you could try that, maybe.

Thx.
I myself am a Marxist, politically –so I don't feel I'm missing much when I pass over Russkie flicks. I've more than made up for it in my reading habits.
While I have seen plenty of SF films, it was more because I was a kid at the time or because I was filling-a-gap-in-my-knowledge-base.
However –as a grown adult –SF hovers very low down in my esteem. This is why I likely won't ever explore Tarkovsky any further.

try the color of pomegranates.
it seems you like strong cinematography, so it's strange you don't like tarkovsky. have you tried Stalker? it's best seen on a big screen.

I've seen all the famous stuff by Sergei Eisenstein but honestly it just didn't stick with me. I've read his books on theory (along with the works of Stanislavsky) but nevertheless neither formed a very powerful influence on me.
My favorite Soviet film is '
Soy Cuba!'
. Strong, strong, strong cinematography.
But other than this, I can't recommend anything. Not a fan of either SF or Tarkovsky.

Ivan the Terrible, Parts 1 and 2.
Eisenstein intended to wrap up the story in Part 3, but Stalin was less than pleased with Ivan's slide into madness because it did not mythologize the character to Stalin's satisfaction. Only about 5 minutes of Part 3 were filmed.
Part 2 went unreleased for ten years until after the deaths of Stalin and Eisenstein.
