That could be true, but he mentioned nothing but money, and never said anything like "After they left, they went into a great musical direction" (because they didn't - they made singles that were sure to make money)
You weren't going to get hit singles with Peter Gabriel led-Genesis when you're best song is 25 minutes long, but that's not what music should be about. You should do the best you want, and hopefully there's a triumph for good taste among the public.

Perhaps they really thought that the band improved. I did too, and money making wasn't the criterion I used.
