Doesn't have to be a band - could be a long-time guitarist of a solo artist.

Not many musicians are indispensable. There have been a lot of bands that carried on fine with a new front man or guitarist. Some were even better. Genesis for instance.

Why did you respond that way??
I didn't waste any time. Sammy's vocal superiority is just one example out of many I illustrated out of many to provide points that Van Halen didn't drop off. Hagar was also not a mediocre vocalist.
Roth & Hagar were both quintessential and epitomic to Van Halen. Roth was there at the beginning with those early hits, and Hagar who brought in a breath of fresh air carried them through the mid-80s and 90s. And with Hagar, they could write more complex and higher key songs vocally, to fit Hagar's voice perfectly suited for arena glam rock, that they could not do before because Roth was incapable of singing them.
I'd also argue that if Roth had stayed in the band, it's possible that they may have not achieved late 80s and 90s success with him. At that time, music was evolving into the MTV and Vh1 and music videos era. The Hagar-era adapted well to that.
All four of Hagar's albums reach number 1 on the charts, which none of the Roth albums were able to accomplish. Now I'm not saying this means Hagar is better is itself, as Hagar had the advantage of joining a band in their prime, and chart placement isn't necessarily reflective of a better album, as it may have no competition. But four consecutive number ones does demonstrate that they were able to maintain their success and fanbase. And they were selling out concerts during this era. If Hagar didn't help them, he certainly didn't hurt them.
If we want to be more accurate - Van Halen dropped off when Hagar quit, when Gary Cherone formally of Extreme joined as lead vocalist for Van Halen III: That's when it truly went downhill for them.
Also lighten up.
Love is like a tree: it grows by itself, roots itself deeply in our being, and continues to flourish over a heart in ruin.

DLR was more creative. I never cared for van hagar.. And they sold a lot because there was no competition. VH was released in 1978, when there was a LOT of competition… I'm not into those ****ty power ballads of Sammy's, but I do like "right now" (good video, too)

Wish you'd not wasted your time writing all that. For you see…the question posed was not who is a superior singer…but bands that fell apart after a members exodus… reading comprehension is a booger!
I would be happy to provide sales numbers indicating this implosion…but I fear that may only serve to confuse you further.
I'm now feeling bad that you did drop the subject "ball" so to speak…so allow me to further illuminate the dark passages of your mind.
Both Dave and Sammy were mediocre vocalists to begin with. The driving force behind Van Halen was stage presence…which Dave had in spades…Sammy drew the deuce
Sammy throws a party….DAVE IS THE PARTY

No.
Sammy Hagar is a far superior singer. This is not an opinion. Roth was never a great singer in the conventional sense, even in his prime. Hagar was on another level, right up there with Steve Perry and Mercury. Hagar was simply a greater singer and better songwriter than Roth had ever been. The Hagar-fronted Van Halen were better, sold more records and were quite simply way more successful than they’d ever been with Roth at the helm.
Hagar can sing all Roth’s songs, and did so on tours, but Roth could never tackle Hagar’s Right Now and Dreams. When Roth rejoined later on, they’d leave out Hagar’s songs.
When he wanted to rejoin, Danny was for it, Cory against. I think Cory should have given him another chance
