As a high tenor, he had a good voice, but he was not the right replacement for Lou Dewitt. Jimmy Fortune was a soloist, not a harmonist. After Lou retired and they replaced him with Jimmy, the Statlers became Jimmy Fortune and the Statler Bros. I remember that, at the time, a friend of mine said that Jimmy "tried too hard."
He wasn't meant to be a quarter of a combined voice; he was a solo voice. The Statler Bros were one voice together, at their best.

The Statler bros had been singing together for decades. Hard to beat that chemistry. Fortune worked alright in the harmonies but his lead vocals didn't fit the band at all. Personally I find his voice to feminine and while we wrote some good songs with the band by the time he joined the Statler Bros were way to focused on bland ballads.
