R.S. Summary
:
In the late Sixties, the Motor City Five were the house band for the White Panther Party, devoted to "dope, guns and beep in the streets." But on their second album, they channel their ferocious sound and politics into the concise, Chuck Berry-like riffs of "The American Ruse," "Looking at You" and "Shaking Street."
My Vote
: Yea. It took me a while to come around to it (it is obvious and predictable in places), but it does have a seductive pullas does everything I've heard from this band. Their vaunted revolutionary leanings can be almost entirely ignored (it was never communicated well through the music), and the real appeal here is their fond and embittered nostalgia for adolescence. Hardly an original focus, but it's gripping. Credit Jon Landau for this thing holding up as well as it does. One bad song: "Let Me Try".
*On my extended absence: I moved on the 12th, and it's been an ordeal. That, plus the outcome on the 8th left me so emotionally devastated, depressed, and disgusted with the state of my country and culture that I haven't been in the proper state of mind to write anything. There's also the fact that my best friend is set to have a heart transplant in March, and the possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act would almost certainly kill him in a few months by depriving him of the insurance coverage he needs for the procedure. So, my goal of finishing this silly project before the new year is kaput, but I've been too mentally preoccupied with other things to find time for IMDb.

That's right and they got through two terms of Obama resulting in a country in a hell of a lot better shape than the pile of sh!t he was handed - two unpaid for wars, an economy in the worst condition since the great Depression and shedding 500,000 jobs per month!!! And remember, Obama WON the election by damn near the same number of votes this joke LOST the popular vote. A majority of Americans didn't vote for this embarrassment, and we now find out the Russian govt had a hand in influencing our election which worked out with Putin getting exactly the result that he wanted. We shouldn't be outraged by this?!? What the f@ck kind of dictatorship do you live under? Like I said, stick to what you know, cause it certainly isn't our politics..and we're not going to get over it. Hey the f@ckin' rightwing NEVER "got over" Obama's two unanimous elections and we're not going to get over this oneand we shouldn't.
Nobody's forcing you into this conversation, you don't like it.don't respond.
Youre not special, but you and your ilk have been complaining about it at every opportunity, during completely unrelated discourses (a Music forum FFS) a lot more than any losing political group I can recall.
People are surprised because most people are surrounded by somewhat likeminded folks and Trump is the most disliked candidate in history. If you grew up in a relatively liberal environment, currently live in or near a major city, and believe exit polls, it looked like a runaway victory for Clinton. But it turns out that the Dems ran a godawful campaign and underestimated Trump's ability to energize people who rarely if ever vote, among other things.

Meh, and I grudgingly give that as a big fan of the band. Very disappointing after the debut that exhibited a seemingly unhinged, bordering on free-form, yet potent and feral rock band. John Landau effectively neuters them here and the choices to open the album with "Tutti Frutti" and close it "Back in the USA" were bad ones, not to mention some of their own weaker originals like "Tonight" and "High School". The decision to distance themselves from the then jailed John Sinclair and his White Panther Party, in what seemed to be an effort to be taken more seriously didn't bode well either. Perhaps someone at their new label Atlantic, also had a say in the matter of toning them down as well (or John Landau). "Shakin' Street" is notable for featuring Fred Smith on vocals, and isn't a terrible song, but the albums two best songs, "Looking At You" and "Human Being Lawnmower", appear in better forms on several other compilations and bootlegs. The best version of "Looking at You" appears in it's original single version on the wonderful ROIR-released cassette,
Babes In Arms
. Can't help but wonder if the band themselves realized this since these were pretty much the only two songs from the album to survive in their live sets after it's release. Thankfully they were given most of their balls back on the next album.
Normal Is A Myth.
