I realize she's kind of an easy target but for me compared to the pop singers of past generations who went on to be as big in their time, Taylor really lacks anything unique in either music style, vocals or anything. She doesn't have anything signature to just her. She hasn't popularized (or even close) anything musically, it's all very safe, kiddy stuff with always the most obvious melodies possible and no sense of experimentation beyond what's already been at the time recently done (like her attempt at dubstep-pop on "I Knew You Were Trouble" or ripping off Lana Del Rey's style with "Wildest Dreams" etc). She doesn't even really have one signature song in the way that typically 'most popular right now' popstars before her have.
And all that wouldn't really be a problem if she weren't known just as much if not more for her dating life as her music (or more specifically, deliberately making her dating life a commodity for the press and a strange way to fuel interest in her music).

I totally agree with you.
I can't stand any of her songs. She is one of the most ambitious pop stars with so much cringe-worthy charm that I would just switch off the radio whenever the station airs her song. I'm shallow for disliking her that much. But hey, that's just me. Adele is another singer that I can't listen to, but comparing her to T.S., I would rather listen to Adele's songs (cringing).

Are we really going into how generic pop artists are?
So Swift uses 'obvious melodies,' whatever that means. But it's pop music. It's supposed to be obvious and generic. Do people listen to metal and then complain about the loud guitars and angry vocals? No, that's what you get when you listen to metal. When you listen to pop you get a generic, simplistic sound.
I don't see how she is worse than any other female pop star.

Most artists have their flaws, she has many but at least she is a legit musician who plays instruments, writes her songs and at least attempts to sing live(she's off-key and off-breath but at least the audience can hear her voice unlike Gomez)..
Also not all musicians have to write complex music, take Dolly Parton as an example.. she's a legend of country music and most of her songs have very "basic" melodies/harmonies(and she says that herself) which isn't wrong.. simple is better sometimes.
But to answer your question.. no, she isn't.. the lamest female popstar is Britney Spears without a doubt, she's the definition of a drug-addicted and lazy prostitute who just got "lucky" in the business.. no talents whatsoever in that woman.

I give Taylor Swift quite a bit of credit. Her vocal range may not be the greatest, but her songwriting is respectable, especially considering she first got famous in her teens, whereas many pop singers getting famous at that age don't write their own songs at all, let alone write anything as memorable as "Teardrops on My Guitar" or "Love Story".
I think she easily has more overall talent than Britney, although Britney has a few good songs, and even Madonna (who has a good number of good songs, but I'm not sure how much credit
she
deserves for them.) I also think she has far more good songs than Miley Cyrus, although Miley has more vocal skill. I'm not sure if Katy Perry has ever been as "big" as Taylor, but Taylor tops her in every way.

Calling me an idiot doesn't support your argument
I will instead provide proof for her abilities:
That is only her middle register, no highest nor low notes in this.. breath support is good, decent enunciation and resonance in her vocals.. sings on pitch, has nasality but that is part of her style which is acceptable.. overall that's a good voice that becomes great once you factor in the extreme parts of her voice like her low register.
Regarding her talent, she plays piano and guitar at least in a basic but decent level and composes and writes most of her songs.. she never lip-syncs nor hides behind backing vocals.. I don't see how that's being untalented.

I never understood the popularity of Madonna. She isn't a singer. She is singer/dancer/actress. Or maybe she is just a celebrity. She was absolutely huge for a few years in the '80s. Then her sales slowed down. But the media stayed obsessed with her even after most of the public stopped caring. Early in their careers Madonna was compared to Cyndi Lauper. I thought Lauper was much more talented.

Okay, I went from a huge fan to hater to a stan with her career, so I'm biased. I'll try to explain why I became a fan again as best as I can.
Taylor has way more control over her music than many pop stars before her. With her country albums, she wrote, sang, and produced the albums basically by herself and one other person (if I remember correctly). With
1989
, she collabed with more people, but if you look into it, she was incredibly involved with its production, much more than the average pop star. Pop stars like Britney or Madonna sometimes wrote their songs, but Taylor has written or co-written every single one, and she has always produced her songs. To me, it made her pop music seem more personal, which I appreciated. I moved on from pop in 2011 or so, but Taylor brought me back into it.
Her music style is certainly unique with its songwriting. Why do you think people slut shame her so much? She is very open about the pros and the cons of her love life, which she parodied in "Blank Space," which to me, is her signature song (so I disagree with you there). I feel like 1.6 or 1.7 billion views on YouTube cements that. I guess Bad Blood is another key song due to all of the marketing it received, but I hate that song so I skip over even thinking about it.
Also, she often tells a story in many of her songs, and she has sometimes has foreshadowed her later career in her earlier songs. You don't generally hear the stories in her later singles, but if you listen to her albums completely, the stories are still there. I also think it was cool how "Mean" (2010) completely foreshadowed her entire
1989
era. Her transition into pop also felt very authentic due to this reason compared to other pop stars' experimenting with whatever the latest fad is. I'm not sure if she can do it again, however.
I'm probably just looking too much into her music because I've grown up with it since I've been 15 or 16, and at 24, I feel like her music has represented my personal growth. I'll likely get over her future career if she doesn't authentically change her style, but she definitely has huge charisma, the songwriting and instrumental chops, production savvy, etc. to differentiate her from previous pop stars. Her vocals are a bit average, however, so I agree with you there.
