^ That's why it's useful to learn to read frequency response, distortion, impulse, and square wave graphs. Once you know what to look for you can easily rule out bad headphones and narrow it down to good ones (at any price range). Graphs don't tell the WHOLE story, but I'd say they tell 80-90% of it. One reason I recommend InnerFidelity as a resource is because Tyll knows how to read/analyze graphs and not just rely on audiophool subjectivist jargon:

I actually meant over-the-ear headphones as well.
I can help then. Closed or open? Open will usually sound better but doesn't block out any external sound. If open, on that budget I'd look at the Sennheiser HD600 or HD650. They're legendary reference phones and the prices have come down since the introduction of the HD800 (which is better in some ways, worse in others). For closed I'd check out the Oppo PM-3 or NAD HP50both excellent sound quality for the price, with the former being a bit more comfortable with better looks.

As far as brands go, I've been fairly happy with Sennheiser. But mine are over-ear. Be careful of spending too much - but you don't want a cheap pair either. A site like Cnet might be good for reviews, as well as what people say at Amazon, etc.

What do you think is the best headphones to get right now for me.
No-one can give you a definitive answer on this, as there's so much variation. There isn't one correct answer. There isn't one best set of headphones to buy.
You have to consider what you're listening to, on what you're listening to it, and what kind of 'sound signature' you prefer; i.e. do you prefer a 'neutral', 'reference'/monitor style of sound or something more consumer-friendly, with a U shaped signature (emphasising bass and trebles with slightly recessed mids.)?
What are you looking for in 'better sound' fidelity or what headphone reviewers often describe as 'fun'? There's no right or wrong answer to this. Different people prefer different things.
I would recommend A) reading some expert reviews - WhatHiFi and TrustedReviews are good for this, and B) if you narrow down your choices and if you can, I'd advise buying from a physical shop where you can test before you purchase as you don't want to spend a bunch of cash on something you'll find less than satisfying, even if it is technically a really great pair of headphones.
