What was that final shot from? . . . the definition of the "doorway to Hell?" Is that a real reference or just made up for the film?

It's the final chapter to Louie's "life story" as a gangster that he was writing in Florida. After he found out about his kid brother, he told the publisher that the book wasn't finished yet. Now that he was dead, somebody finished it for him and we get to see the last page in the closing shot.
