I looked on amazon.co.uk but despite the fact that they have a wide range of editions to choose from, they have put the same reviews on all of them so I don't know which is the best transfer (apparently, there are some fairly sloppy ones out there.)
Anybody know which DVD version is the best?

Positively, the KINO release is the one to get. It presents the movie in its full 89 mins. form and the film's picture and audio in overall excellent condition. I've owned a DVD of that release since earlier this year, have so far watched it at least twice, and am entirely pleased and satisfied with it.
Following is the url for that DVD release on Amazon (don't be put off by the listing indicating the movie is 80 mins. in length, as that ABSOLUTELY is an error):
http://www.amazon.com/Farewell-Arms-Kino-Classics-Edition/dp/B005SQ3AO4/ref=cm_rdp_product_img
(FYI: If interested in KINO's Blu-ray edition, it's to be found on a different Amazon product page.)
I invite you to read the detailed product quality review that I personally posted on Amazon on 2/27/13. Here's the url to it:

I have heard "not so bad" things about VCI version, but yeah, Image DVD is the one to get.
There are out there a number of unwatchable versions sold by 1 dollar, don't buy them.

The sound quality on the Image disk has NOTHING to do with the time period. 'Poor sound recording' was ancient history by 1932. (Think of
any other movie
from that year.) The sound problem on the disk is almost certainly the transfer.
That said, the picture quality and the original restored length make up for it. There is a bit missing near the end an odd splice that one wishes Image had gotten material for from elsewhere but other than that it's fine. Just turn your volume up.

by all means get the IMAGE edition - they have found a resonable fine-print copy which fully restores all the censored material - the film is very frank about matters sexual - which increases the running time from 79 to 89 minutes. It's a significant improvement to the film and the combination of missing scenes (sometimes just moments or lines of dialogue) along with the inferior quality of so many duped print Public Domain cheapo editions undoubtably is responsible for the surprisingly low numerical rating of this title on IMdB.
