Some spoilers ahead:
I watched
The Invisible Man
on Sven and enjoyed it, though impressively mounted a production as it is,James Whale at or near his career peakthere's something of a downer aspect to it. I don't mind the hamming supporting players particularly, even as Una can get on my nerves, but aside from the lovely Gloria Stuart, the thunderous voice of Claude Rains, the bandages, some good snow scenes, the movie for me didn't quite catch fire (so to speak) till near the end.
There are some wonderful scenes, and what has been widely commented on as an amazingly good recreaction of contemporary England, unusual for an American film of its period, especially the pub and small village scenes. Yet the Invisible Man is so arrogant and near mad at the beginning as to generate no real sympathy. He has neither the pathos of the Frankenstein monster, the allure of the exotic of Dracula nor the dessicated authority of the Mummy, as incarnated as Ardath Bey.
All those horror figures were opposed by heroes, young and old alike. Henry Travers, charming actor though he was, evokes his most famous movie role, that of Clarence the angel in
It's a Wonderful Life
. His persona is good natured more than authoritative, and he lacks the
gravitas
of Edward Van Sloan. William Harrigan's unlikable Kemp is nearer to a villain than a hero, which creates a void where human sympathies are concerned. The police seem more like British Keystone cops than men who know what they're doing, but then how
could
they know?
Ironically, the humble, elderly farmer near the end is the closest there is to a true hero, and he looks about eighty. His "there's breathing in my barn" kicks off the final act. In this the film nicely comes full circle, with the magalomaniacal Jack Griffin brought down by a modest man of the soil just doing his civic duty. It's a good movie, and a fun one at times, but it leaves me a little cold. There are some real life parallels in its time of release being the year Adolf Hitler and the Nazi party came to power in Germany, and while Hitler was himself anything but invisible, he too was a megalomaniac who sought to conquer the world, and it took far more than the efforts of an old man and local police to bring
him
down.
