When Valerie Hobson is held prisoner on the steam ship and then does her "I forgot about the war " speech her collapse onto the stairs was a classic piece of over acting, much copied by comedy skit shows. Now I know where they got it from. Sebastian Shaw's tight lipped restrained wave from the bridge of the destroyer was also part of the 30#s restrained acting. Wonderful.

Some of the acting was a bit arch and fruity here and there.

Melodrama was quite popular in the 1930s.
Valerie could also do restrained very well. It's not her so much as it's the style that was popular at the time
