This film has not been "remade" - the book has been adapted numerous times since for both the big screen and television. And this 1939 movie is not the first film adaptation; there was a silent film version in 1920 which is now considered "lost". There's a page for it here on IMDB.
People need to learn the difference between remakes and adaptations. Remakes are based on an earlier film/tv production; adaptations are taken from the original source material and adapted. A very large difference.
