It's now been 7 YEARS since the original poster mentioned this DVD isn't available and guess what? It's STILL not available. I just checked. You can get a copy for $100 or you can get an import.
Why can't this classic have a re-release on DVD? I too would like to see the documentary with Geraldine Fitzgerald.
What are they waiting for? I know LOTS of people who would buy this.

This is ridiculous. The first post of this topic was three years ago, and still, no DVD. I saw that one of the early posters mentioned that they were collecting AFI's original top 100, and this was one of only two films that weren't available on DVD. (The other was Duck Soup, which is now out.) HOW IS THIS NOT RELEASED ON DVD YET?

I had tried back in 2000 to order this at A&B Sound ( music store in Canada) I waited about 5 weeks before we got any reply. We were told that the rights are owned by someone in Germany and it would be a matter of up to them to re-release it.
I did not get a name..only that. I know it is not much but all I can contribute. I think the best way to obtain it or get it onto Dvd is do what one of the posters suggestedgoing to TCM and requesting it.

I bought Import version of 1939 WH and watched 3 times in last weekend, really enjoyed it. However, this version does not have menu selection as well as no documentary, etc. except the film itself. The original U.S. version is out of print and too expensive to afford. I wonder when we can have next release with reasonable cost? I appreciate your info. Thanks in advance.
I have no inside information, however, I've noticed that several Wyler films were distributed on DVD in the US by HBO and are now out of print. All of these, except for
Wuthering Heights
, has been subsequently released by MGM. I am sure they have this in the works, perhaps the delay may be any extra featurettes, as this would almost certainly come out as a 2-Disc Collectors Edition. Hopefully by the end of the year we'll see something?

Does anyone know who has the rights to this movie (i.e. who has the "power" to re-release it)?
I would gladly email them on a daily basis to lobby for a DVD release. This is my favorite "unobtainable" movie.

its been quite while since they sold this dvd on the market. i have ordered a copy of this movie but apparently its now unavailable.i have a copy of this movie but its a bootleg edition. can we contact hbo and tell them to re issue their dvd or must we wait for another company who's willing to risk and shell out money to issue a dvd of this great movie. this is one of the two afi top100 movies that i don't have in my collection, the other one is duck soup. i hope that someday,i will have an original copy of this classic gem

Actually, sorry..I just checked and they must have sold out here in the uk. I did get mine a few months ago. My edition is in French, Spanish, German and Italian. I don't understand why they stopped releasing this. I suppose it's just a matter of time for another re-issue. Quality of this one is very good.

Probably you know this by now but it has been re-realeased in the UK. Check on Amazon.

FINALLY!!!

Not that this answers the question at all, just adds to several other
similar posts. But I also bought a foreign copy of the film from
Viet Nam. I hunted forever to find an American copy for less than
an arm and a leg, but to no avail. I would love to see it re-released
as it is my favorite movie of all time, though considering the taste
in movies most of the American public has, I dont hold out much
hope. However, if any of the movie mogul muckity-mucks at
HBO can hear from their plush offices, you release movies
unworthy of mention along with Wuthering Heights by the
hundreds. Obviously, if so many of us are willing to spring for
inferior foreign releases, this is a worthwhile project. If you cared
more about releasing a quality product than crap that lines your
overstuffed pockets this would have been done years ago. Five
years is too long a time. The people have spoken; power to the
people! You rat fink mugwumps!

Sorry, I can't answer your question either. I have also been waiting for an HBO or MGM re-issue and have no new information to share. Like you, I bought a foreign release (Chinese) which has no documentary. I bought mine through Amazon and believed (perhaps foolishly) that it was an American release which included the Geraldine Fitzgerald interview. Mine has 9 chapters instead of the 24 chapters on HBO. I did enjoy watching it last night.video and audio are good considering age of film, but I still want to see the HBO release. I am curious about your dvd. Is it Korean or Chinese release? How many chapters does it have? Thanks.
