Couldn't they have dripped a little water to let it dry in the sun, to see if the salt residue was there??

Moll had to drink enough of the water to see if it was harmful and thus prevent the others from trying it.
Moll finally understood that he had lived a wasted life and realized it in time to repent, ask forgiveness and be saved.
Hessler turned his back to the Christ like figure and continued to live a life foe himself only. He may have some more temporal years on earth, but he will not have eternal life. Cambreau (sp) said he would not see him again). Hessler was German and it was more than coincidence that we were soon going to be going to war agaist them.
Yes Joan Crawford was a prostitute. She had a black heart, but learned to love.
I admire Clark for taking this role as he had just done Gone with the Wind and did not have to be so bad so all about him. He learned that someone died for him so he could have everlasting Life and happiness.
The other convicts did a good job of fleshing out their characters too.
I really enjoyed this movie!

It seems to me he could have drunk a smaller, sub-fatal amount. The plot required that he die, however.

I'm glad you wrote this. It seemed to me throughout the movie that Hessler was an allegory (?) for Hitler. Is this what you are also implying? It was more his mannerisms and speech that implied Hitler for me though.

I saw the theme of self sacrifice, Hessler as the Devil, etcgood allegory.
was just looking at the water issue from a purely scientific standpoint, apart from the allegorical
signed, not that dumb
I've seen some real Hesslers on this sitenot you, of course -
it seems to be the fashion to hector people on here-should be a place to learn, wouldn't you say

Good Grief you missed the whole point of the movie! Didn't you realize who Hessler was and the effect he had on all of the people he came in contact with?
