It seemed to me that in some scenes he was practically
imitating
Bogie. I kept expecting him to say, "I stick my neck out for nobody!"

Much younger and fresher perhaps but not in 1942 (the year of Casablanca).

No. I don't. It needed a younger man, and as you said, Ladd was terrific, the performance of his life.
