The old mans panic alarm.. that OPENS doors when he is in danger? Don't most panic buttons shut doors to protect the person/room?
Well, perhaps it is installed in case he is taken ill, rather than against an attacker, so medical help can arrive. I think I've just shot holes in my own query..

I thought the same thing, the doors should close. If he had an emergency, he could just open them, or leave them unlocked under normal conditions.
